Wimberley Valley is one of Texas' best kept secrets. Rolling hills, winding rivers, world class wineries. Here is the catch nobody tells you at booking: getting around is not easy if you have not planned it.
Before you roll into town assuming Uber or Lyft has your back, stop and think. Here is how to get around Wimberley like a local instead of a lost tourist.
Most visitors underestimate this, and it is the single thing that wrecks an itinerary. Rough drive times from Wimberley Square:

Perfect for wine tours, date nights and brewery hopping. A licensed driver comes to you and takes the wheel of your own vehicle, so you keep your car, your seats and your cooler, and nobody in the group has to volunteer to stay sober. It is the most economical serious option because there is no vehicle in the price.
Visiting with a crew? A shuttle van is the answer for bachelorette weekends, wedding guests and birthday tours. Everyone rides together, nobody gets stuck driving, and the day does not fragment into three cars trying to find the same gate on a road with no phone signal.

Want a more elevated evening? Luxury SUVs and Mercedes Sprinters, for proposals, anniversaries, romantic weekends and the occasional entirely justified act of treating yourself. Same driver standard, considerably better photographs.
Entirely reasonable, as long as you go in with your eyes open. Download your maps before you leave signal, check winery and brewery hours the same morning because they change, and watch your pours, because tastings add up faster than anybody expects. Above all, do not plan on calling a ride afterwards. That is the assumption that strands people.

Wimberley Valley is built for wandering, tasting and relaxing. It is not built for winging it. The visitors who love this place are the ones who sorted the driving before they arrived and then never thought about it again.
Think before you visit. Book your ride. Then kick back and enjoy the Hill Country the way it was meant to be enjoyed.
Sometimes, and that is the problem. Rideshare coverage in the Wimberley Valley is thin and unpredictable rather than absent. You may get a car into town on a Saturday afternoon and find nothing at all when you come out of a winery at five, or when you need a ride at six in the morning for a flight. Nobody plans a day around a service that works some of the time, which is why visitors who enjoy their trip book transport in advance.
No. There is no bus system, no rail and no shuttle loop in the Wimberley Valley. Getting from your lodging to the square, out to the wineries and back again is entirely down to a private vehicle, whether that is yours, a friend's or a booked service.
You need access to a vehicle, though not necessarily your own and not necessarily one you drive. Attractions sit roughly fifteen to thirty minutes apart on country roads, and almost nothing in the valley is walkable from a rental house. Visitors either drive themselves, book a driver for their own car, or book a vehicle with a driver in it.
Most of the Wimberley and Driftwood tasting rooms are ten to twenty five minutes from each other and from Wimberley Square. Fredericksburg wine country is a different trip entirely at roughly an hour and a half each way. That gap is why a wine day here is planned as a route rather than improvised as you go.
A designated driver in your own vehicle, because there is no vehicle cost in the price. It starts at $250 for a five hour block for the whole group rather than per person, which on a Wimberley wine day works out at roughly $93 a head for a party of two to six and less as the group grows.
Austin is roughly an hour, Austin Bergstrom airport about 65 miles, San Antonio International about 90 miles, and San Marcos twenty five minutes or so. Cell service is patchy on parts of Ranch Road 12 and out on the Devil's Backbone, so download your maps before you set off rather than after you lose signal.
Yes, especially for weekends in spring and autumn, for wedding weekends and for holidays. There is a small number of vehicles and drivers in this valley and the good ones are spoken for weeks ahead. Booking late is the single most common reason visitors end up stranded or paying far more than they planned.
